The Hunger Games

I liked the books but I liked the first movie even more. The storytelling is tight, tense, and Jennifer Lawrence is perfect in the role of Katniss. The only quibble I have with the Hunger Games series is this: I'm constantly hearing about "the gatekeepers" of children's literature. Now here's a trilogy of novels about kids killing kids—so where are the gatekeepers?

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

A clever, well-written fantasy with some nice historical overtones. A couple of Hollywood style over-reaches spoil what could have been just perfect.

Jeff, Who Lives at Home

Terrific actors, two of my favorites—Jason Segel and Ed Helms—but I didn't find the concept for the movie particularly compelling.

Mirror Mirror

Hollywood's version of playing chicken. (Released the weekend) Mirror, Mirror vs. Snow White and the Huntsman (coming this summer). Meanwhile, where's our poor little flying waif, Maximum Ride?

21 Jump Street

Never saw the TV show, didn't want to. Still don't want to. I love Jonah Hill and the movie definitely has some very funny moments.

Seeking Justice

Chances are you won't be able to find this at your local theater, but it's actually a pretty decent thriller.

Silent House

There's a certain kind of movie that hooks you and you pray that the ending isn't going to involve aliens, or dreams, or psychologically-driven fantasy. Unfortunately, your dreams will not come true with this one. As for the acting, Elizabeth Olsen is terrific in the lead role.
